It is believed that the iron pillar at Delhi originally stood at Udayagiri and inscription on the pillar shows that Udayagiri was called ‘Viṣṇupadagiri’ ('hill of Viṣhṇu's foot-prints'). The caves were reworked under the patronage of ‘Chandragupta II’ and ‘Kumargupta’ and are notable for its ancient sculpture of Vishnu, in his incarnation as the boar-headed Varaha, rescuing the earth as described in mythology. Udayagiri has a series of rock-shelters, ruined buildings, inscriptions, water systems, fortifications and habitation mounds. After this the Tour will proceed towards Bhopal (58 km.).

Tour Code 09

(Bhopal-Bhimbetka-Bhojpur-Bhopal)

Day Excursion

Monday, 08th October 2018

  • After Breakfast in Hotel Palash Residency, Bhopal, the tour will proceed towards Bhimbetika

  • Bhimbetka – (45 km. from Bhopal) Bhimbetka Rock Shelters, declared a World Heritage Site in 2003, are archaeological site exhibiting the earliest traces of human life on the Indian subcontinent. The shelters were inhabited by Homo erectus more than 1,00,000 years ago while the rock paintings are approximately 30,000 years old.  The word Bhimbetka means "sitting place of ‘Bhima’’. The colors used are vegetable colors. The paintings are classified under 7 periods. Period I - These are linear representations, in green and dark red, of huge figures of animals.

  • Period II - Comparatively small in size showing linear decorations on the body, animals, hunting scenes, communal dances, birds, musical instruments, mothers and children, pregnant women, men carrying dead animals, drinking and burials  etc. Period III - These drawings reveal that during this period the cave dwellers of this area were in contact with the agricultural communities of the Malwa plains. Period IV & V - Painted in red, white and yellow depicting riders, religious symbols, tunic-like dresses, scripts, figures of yakshas, tree gods and magical sky chariots. Period VI & VII - The paintings are geometric linear and the colours used were prepared by combining manganese, hematite and wooden coal. In one painting, a large wild boar is seen and in other a man holding a trident-like staff and dancing has been named “Nataraj” Archaeological Survey of India uses chemicals and wax to preserve these paintings. After this the tour will depart for Bhojpur.

  • Tour will enjoy lunch by MPT at Highway Treat, Bhimbetka and will proceed towards Bhojpur.

  • Bhojpur - (25 km. from Bhimbetika)It is a town of historical and religious importance, situated on the Betwa River. Bhojpur got its name from Parmara king ‘Bhoja’ ( 1000–1055 CE). Bhojpur is famous for its incomplete Bhojeshwar temple dedicated to ‘Shiva’ which is known as ‘Somnath of the East’. The temple houses one of the largest liṅga in India. The monolithic lingam in the sanctum rises to a height of 7.5 feet with a circumference of 17.8 feet. The building is under the protection of the ASI. The outer walls and superstructure of the temple were never built. Opposite the temple, is a rock-shelter, known as Parvati’s Cave which contains a number of architectural fragments. Remains of Raja Bhoja's palace can be seen here. There is a Jain shrine hosting three figures of the Tirthankaras contained within one colossal statue 20 feet high, one of Mahavira and two of Parsvanath. After visiting Bhojpur the Tour will proceed towards Bhopal (28 km).
